Byron Glacier

Byron Glacier

Our Mountains are covered in Glaciers. The valley we live in has seven surrounding glaciers and everytime we drive somewhere we see more. When the snow starts to melt it becomes easier to see them. This glacier is right next to Portage Lake and is an easy mile in. We had to go twice it was so fun!

Portage Lake

Kodi had never seen Aaron use the camera before and she may have thought it was a shotgun. lol! She stood by my side and growled and barked and let him have it.
But once she figured it out she was happy as can be.

We didn't have much time before Aaron had to get to work, so we decided to come back. On our way home we saw this little fluff ball on the railroad tracks.

Cute little guy

On our second time through, we decided we were going to hike out and touch the glacier. Glaciers always look deceivingly close by, but was really miles away through lava rock and slick snow. We decided to go on the right side across the snow and rock so we wouldn't fall through the middle into the river beneath us. Smart thinking we thought.

Headed through the lava rock

Aaron started to get a little nervous because he doesn't have the greatest balance in the world. Kodi kept running into us and knocking us off our feet so he had good reason. We kept crossing these avalanche spots and watched the snow and rock slide down towards us more than once. When Aaron slipped on the snow and thought he was a goner (literally he screeched like a girl) we decided we were out of our league and would go back the way we came. To be fair, if he had fallen all the way down this snow hill, he probably would have fallen into the underground river and been sucked away forever. ha ha.

So close and yet so far away!
