Matanuska Ice Caves

Matanuska Ice Caves

Matanuska is very different in the winter than it is in the summer. Everything is so white! It's like living in gray scale for a couple of hours with a little blue thrown in. We had heard at church from some visitors that Matanuska had some ice caves. Both us had really really wanted to go into some ice caves in the summer but they had all melted by the time we got there. We basically were the only ones around and we wandered through the valley for a couple of hours. Amazing experience.

Matanuska Glacier Valley

Delicious

We army crawled through that little hole and it was like being inside a blue geode because of all the ice crystals. It was a little nerve wracking to be 30 feet inside of a glacier.

We found two ice caves on our own and climbed up the spires counting ourselves very lucky. We ran into a guy doing construction and started chatting. He said we missed some of the very best ones, so I hopped on the back of his snow mobile and Aaron took off walking behind us. He dropped me off at one of them and told us how to get to another three! He was so nice, and he was right. We would have missed some of the better ones! One of the coolest experiences I've had in my life!
