Cinder Cone Volcano

Cinder Cone Volcano

Lassen National Park is full of Volcano's. They have four in the park, and one of them was the last to erupt since Mt. Saint Helen's. The one we hiked up was extinct, but still in perfect cinder cone shape. The hike was rated as strenuous, but it was only two and half a miles so we didn't think it could be too hard.

The picture below isn't one of ours. It's taken from the air but shows the trail up the volcano perfectly.

It started at a beautiful lake, which made us wish we had brought our kayaks and fishing poles. The whole trail was surrounded by lava beds and the gravel was just finely crushed up lava rock.

The path up was daunting. It was 800ft up, but the gravel made it a two steps up, one step back down. I had to give Aaron the backpack for Grace and we had to rest every ten steps. I would now rate this trail strenuous no matter how short it was!

Looking up the side of the volcano on the way up. It was ridiculously steep.
