The Iditarod
The Iditarod starts in Willow which is only about a half an hour from Girdwood and goes 1049 miles up to Nome Alaska. It takes about a week for the sled teams to travel the distance. We have a local Girdwood man in it, nicknamed "Frenchie" because of his ancestry in France. We've seen the meadow mushers giving rides in Moose Meadows and thought it would be fun to go and see the start of the Iditarod. The real start is in Willow but the day before they have a huge celebration in Anchorage and dump tons of snow in the streets downtown to let them race downtown. There were tons of people, vendors, and tourist shops. Becka (one of the massage therapists) was helping out so she introduced us to the dogs and then we ran to the starting point to watch Frenchie go through.
The dogs were so adorable! They were ready to run.
On our way home the mountains were covered with fog and then the sun came out and blasted it down. The ocean was like glass and it was so beautiful.
It's fun you know some one in the race. I hope Frenchie does well. You'll have to let us know. You will be happy to know that we had fog everyday at Oceanside!!! It was very cold--we still had fun though.
